A Chemical pH Indicator for use in Ammonia Detection, Industrial Cleaning and Battery Printing.

The Invention

Researchers at London MET university have developed a new fluorescent material, SyGlo, for detection of pH with attractive luminescent properties including high quantum yield and long radiative lifetime. The compound has a manipulatable emittance wavelength dependent on pH. Once a particular pH is reached the emittance wavelength is altered and uniquely, can be locked in its new state even after being brought back to the original pH. SyGlo can be used in solution, or can be easily incorporated into different fibres/polymers for different applications.

Market Opportunity: Ammonia Detection

Ammonia has been widely used in the production of explosives, fertilizers, and as an industrial coolant. The excess presence of ammonia in the environment, however, creates potential hazards to human beings and ecosystems. Ammonia is toxic to many aquatic organisms even in very low concentrations and inhalation of only a small dose of ammonia vapour causes acute poisoning to people.
Detecting and measuring the concentration of ammonia is of interest in many scientific and technological areas, including food safety. Conventional techniques for the detection of ammonia are complex and require further instruments for analysis. Therefore, industry needs more easy and inexpensive techniques for the detection of ammonia.The SyGlo sensor can offer simple and cost effective solutions for ammonia detection. Addtionally, SyGlo could serve as a record for high pH environments in fluctuating systems (e.g. in intermittent ammonia leaks).

Market Opportunity: Industrial Cleaning

pH sensors such as SyGlo can be used in markets where it is essential to monitor that proper cleaning or where disinfection has been carried out. Regulatory bodies such as the departments of health often impose a certain value for the pH of the sanitization solution to be used. For example, the pH should be between 8 and 10 based on the chlorine concentration. Similarly, an iodine solution is meant to have a pH value of 5 or lower.

Market Opportunity: Battery Printing

There is a potential for the SyGlo to be incorporated into cathode/electrode to monitor if battery has gone off. London MET are interested in talking to potential partners or collaborators to further develop this application.

Project Status

This technology has been patented and is at PCT phase. Further prototyping and testing is being carried out.
